Feathers are hot for summer and fall 2012

We came across this awesome article by Gloria Tietgens Sladek of The Plain Dealer and wanted to share it with you.  Guess which fashion item is most popular...

"If you're fashion-conscious and want to look that way this summer and fall, follow the flock.

Although we have seen feathers adorning hair and earlobes for some time, there is much more to come. For instance, you might find a strappy sandal with fluffy pink feathers at the toe. During New York Fashion Week in February, we saw feathers on dresses, hats and even coats. Look for T-shirts with mirrored beads and feathers. Think Art Deco.

Colors are vibrant with names like goldfinch, cardinal and peacock. Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci designed a glamorous black gown for Beyonce with beading and purple ostrich feathers at the hemline. You might see stiff rooster feathers adorning a vest or jacket. These feathers have a sense of movement and can be sensual and even warm.

Feathers for personal adornment have been used across time and culture. The feather was introduced to fashion in the Middle Ages when those of high social standing decorated their headdresses with plumes and jewelry. Venetian masks were decorated with crystals, gold, silver and feathers. The elaborate half-mask, usually worn by females, allowed the wearer to still be visible.

The golden eagle's tail feather on the American Indian war bonnet was a symbol of honor and bravery. At times, Indian feathers on clothing were painted for a special event. There were more feathers on the headdress of an Indian chief than any one else's in the tribe. In ancient Egypt, the ostrich feather was a symbol of truth, and the Chinese were known for their feathered fans. And remember Robin Hood? He had a feather in his hat.

In Western culture during the Victorian era, feathers reached a heyday. Huge hats were topped with feathers of egret, ostrich and parrot as women's styles became more colorful and outrageous. Often a whole stuffed bird adorned a hat. The more exotic the feather, the more expensive the hat.

During the 1920s, soft down feather cuffs on lingerie, shawls and dresses were seen on the silver screen. The feather boa was in fashion -- some viewed it as elegant, while others thought it vulgar. Entertainers -- such as actress Mae West, dancer Isadora Duncan and singer/actress Cher -- were known to use boas as part of their act. Gypsy Rose Lee and other striptease artists sometimes used a boa to cover up while flirting with their mostly male audience.

In the United States today, it's illegal to use feathers from songbirds such as chickadees, as well as egrets and birds of prey. Still, because fashion again has a passion for feathers, duck, goose, pheasant, turkey, peacock, ostrich and rooster feathers are generally available.

From the feathers in our pillows and our quill pens to the feathers that fly fishermen cherish and the ornamental ones for fashion, we hope to enjoy their sensuality for years to come.

For now, the humble feather's long fashion career is back. Feathers are everywhere. So choose something elegant and colorful and stand out from the crowd."

Festivals and Concerts are on the way...

We came across this interesting article today correlating the coming concert season with an increase in feather and hair extensions sales.  Check it out and let us know what you think!

"With June just around the corner it can mean only one thing – festival season has almost arrived. This summer’s line-up is better than ever, with the Download, Wireless and T-in-The-Park festivals headlining artists such as The Prodigy, Rihanna and Snow Patrol.

Festival goers around the country are going mad for the latest camping equipment, and most importantly, the ultimate fashion accessories. Websites such as ASOS and Top Shop are promoting weird and wonderful festival outfits to suit everyone from rockers to ravers.

A leading hair extensions retailer has noticed a big increase in sales of Hair Feathers as the temperatures soar and the festival season nears. Hair feathers are fitted using a micro ring so that no damage is caused by harmful glues. Each hair feather is hand manufactured in the UK, and is created using multi coloured rooster feathers. Though most people decide to wear natural colours such as cream and brown, some go for more eye catching colours such as green and orange. There seems to be one for every occasion, every type of hair and every style.

Hair Feathers first became popular in America after legend Stephen Tyler was spotted wearing them. Miley Cyrus has been photographed wearing long green Hair Feathers, complementing her skin and eye-colour. Drew Barrymore was also spotted wearing grey hair feathers, drawing attention to her beautiful blonde locks. Other celebrities who have worn hair feathers include Beyoncé, Hillary Duff, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens.
